Impostor Email to exploit Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express

I received an email a while ago. The email wanted me to upgrade the Microsoft Outlook or Outlook express. It actually attached an upgrade of the patches as well.

This is the first time that i received such an email.

Below is the email content:-

Brief Description

Microsoft has released an update for Microsoft Outlook / Outlook Express. This update is critical and provides you with the latest version of the Microsoft Outlook / Outlook Express and offers the highest levels of stability and security.

Instructions

* Install Update for Microsoft Outlook / Outlook Express (KB910721). To do this, follow these steps:

1. Run attached file officexp-KB910721-FullFile-ENU.exe

2. Restart Microsoft Outlook / Outlook Express

System Requirements

* Supported Operating Systems: Windows 2000; Windows 98; Windows ME; Windows NT; Windows Server 2003; Windows XP; Windows Vista

* This update applies to the following product: Microsoft Outlook / Outlook Express

As you can see the patches name is officexp-KB910721-FullFile-ENU.exe and it has been zip up. Logical thinking tells me that this email is not from Microsoft although the sender name is from Microsoft Support. This is because as you know,  normally any windows updates will be done via downloading from Microsoft auto update utility. Moreover the sender address is not from Microsoft also. Therefore i can tell you that this is some sort of phishing or virus to be spread and install to the email client and exploit it.

I’m wondering why my Eset antivirus is not blocking, delete or quarantine the attachment. Anyway should you come across this email, beware! DO NOT download the zip file and extract and install it. DELETE the email immediately. Or probably search what’s others say.

Updates: Received another same email again this morning and my Eset antivirus has deleted it successfully.

Microsoft to sell Windows 7 without I.E in Europe

Reported by CNET Asia that Microsoft will not bundle Internet Explorer 8 in Windows 7. This is because Microsoft is concern about the antitrust by the European regulators.

Microsoft plans to offer a version in Europe that has the browser removed. Computer makers would then have the option to add the browser back in, ship another browser or ship multiple browsers, according to a confidential memo that was sent to PC makers and seen by CNET News.

“To ensure that Microsoft is in compliance with European law, Microsoft will be releasing a separate version of Windows 7 for distribution in Europe that will not include Windows Internet Explorer,” the software maker said in the memo. “Microsoft will offer IE 8 separately and free of charge and will make it easy and convenient for PC manufacturers to preinstall IE 8 on Windows 7 machines in Europe if they so choose. PC manufacturers may choose to install an alternative browser instead of IE 8, and has always been the case, they may install multiple browsers if they wish.”

Now i wonder how the users is going to browse the files and folder :D

Microsoft and Linux Foundation Joining Force

Reported by Daily Tech, Microsoft and Linux Foundation are actually getting along with another though it does not happen so often. They are actually issued a  joint letter to voice out their displeasure.

This is because ALI (American Law Institute) latest effort to create an implied warranty stating that all software shipped should have no material defects.

The ALI is largely made up of judges and attorneys who are assigned the task of dealing with protocols related to software sales and warranties. Due to serious flaws and other issues, more consumers are interested in having politicians and others deal with defective software, as it can be sometimes difficult to get the companies behind the software to take responsibility.

“Parties should be able to choose the rules that best suit their needs, as they have the most knowledge about their particular transaction,” according to the joint letter. “That is not to say that certain protections — for example, in the business-to-consumer context — are not warranted. But even in today’s common law approach to software contracts, there is no great failure in terms of substandard quality or unmet expectations that would justify imposition of new mandatory rules, particularly given existing remedies under misrepresentation and consumer protection law.”

Both the Linux Foundation and Microsoft especially don’t like the following statement written into the ALI’s Principles of the Law of Software Contracts: “A transferor that receives money or a right to payment of a monetary obligation in exchange for the software warrants to any party in the normal chain of distribution that the software contains no material hidden defects of which the transferor was aware at the time of the transfer. This warranty may not be excluded.”

Cibai: An abstract interpretation-based …

Received a funny link from my friend a while ago. As the title mentioned, it got nothing to do with any programming language or something. It is just the word of it – “Cibai” :D

“We introduce Cibai a generic static analyzer based on abstract interpretation for the modular analysis and verification of Java classes. We present the abstract semantics and the underlying abstract domain, a combination of an aliasing analysis and octagons.

We discuss some implementation issues, and we compare Cibai with similar tools, showing how Cibai achieves a higher level of automation and precision while having comparable performances.

Actually the pronunciation sound like a bad word in Hokkian language ( Chinese dialect). The meaning of it is – private part of female in harsh manner.
