Google’s Nexus One start selling in Britain in the next few weeks and France and Germany likely to follow soon.

The touch-screen device, launched on Tuesday and produced in collaboration with Taiwan electronics group HTC, poses a direct challenge to Apple’s top-selling iPhone.

“I can confirm that Vodafone is the first operator to partner with Google to offer the Nexus One in Europe, starting soon in the UK, in a few short weeks,” a Vodafone spokeswoman told AFP.

Customers will be able to purchase a subsidised Nexus One phone with a Vodafone contract. The device will also be available directly through the Google web store.

Google said earlier it had reached “strategic partnerships” with telecom firm Verizon in the United States and Vodafone in Europe. Vodafone added Wednesday that the group was in talks to sell the Nexus One in France, Germany and other European countries this year. “We’re in early discussions with Google to introduce the offer in France (through SFR) and in Germany and Spain, and more European countries are expected during 2010,” the spokeswoman said.

Google is launching an OS call Google Chrome OS for PC based computers.

“Google Chrome OS is an open-source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks,” noted the company in a statement. “Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010.” Eventually the OS will also be used on other laptops and desktops. The operating system is a “natural extension” of its Chrome Internet browser, launched last year, the firm said.

Google was keen to stress that the Chrome operating system is a separate effort from Android, though, like Android, it will be open-source, meaning other developers can have access to and modify the code. “Android was designed from the beginning to work across a variety of devices from phones to set-top boxes to netbooks,” adds the company in a statement. “Google Chrome OS is being created for people who spend most of their time on the Web, and is being designed to power computers ranging from small netbooks to full-size desktop systems. While there are areas where Google Chrome OS and Android overlap, we believe choice will drive innovation for the benefit of everyone, including Google.”
